Soft starter for LED lamps The module for soft start of LED lamps is a device that extinguishes a sharp surge of current at the moment the lamp is turned on. In cheap LED lamps, manufacturers, as a rule, save on components, so when turned on, for 50-100 microseconds, a huge inrush current can occur, on the order of 50-70 A. Without using a soft start, the following problems can occur – sticking of relay contacts and operation of protective machines. This device can remove the above problems by reducing the current to 5-10 A. The module is mounted behind the lamp in the gap of one of the wires (in series with the load). In a smart home system, the light is controlled by such a small relay module. Inside it is a microcontact that simply closes and breaks the electrical circuit. The problem is that a cheap Chinese (or maybe not Chinese) lamp consumes a huge current at the moment of switching on. For example, a miniature LED light bulb at the time of switching on for a small fraction of a second can consume 30-40 times more than usual. To demonstrate this, we purchased a professional oscilloscope. We assembled an electrical circuit with a current transformer to register the moment the lamp was turned on and saw something very interesting. In the photo above, we see the moment the 5 W penny lamp is turned on! One cell is equal to 10 amperes, and as it is not difficult to notice, the graph reaches 30 A. For those who are far from circuitry, let’s put it simply, at the moment of power supply of 5 W, the lamp consumes 30A x 220V = 6.6 kW for a very short period of time! Very quickly, the current drops and the consumption drops to the declared 5W. But what if you connect 10 of these lamps? If this is true, why don’t they knock out machine guns in apartments? It does not knock out because the pulse is very short. And for the machine to operate, a pulse with a duration of 8 to 15 milliseconds is required. The impulse when the lamps are turned on is much shorter in time. As a result, the delicate contacts of the relay module cannot withstand such a load and can stick together (a small spark occurs at the switching point, as during welding), after which it will not be possible to turn off the light. Why do other unscrupulous manufacturers do this? It’s simple, they save cents on simplifying the electronic circuit. In an apartment without a smart home, there is no relay; the function of switching the electrical circuit is performed by a wall switch. Even if its contacts “stick” at a high starting current, the owner’s strong hand will not even notice how it will tear the contacts apart. A completely different matter is a miniature relay module, which is not endowed with such power as an adult’s hand.. In this photo, the inrush current graph of a high-quality Osram light bulb, which is much more expensive and of better quality than a cheap counterpart. As you can see, the manufacturer has taken care not only that the device shines powerfully with bright light, but is also safe for the associated electronics. But what if you have already bought cheap lamps? Devices that provide a soft start come to the rescue, they allow you to limit the current at the initial moment, and eliminate the failure of expensive relay modules.
